Grand Lake's Quiet Season Now Has a Workshop on Park Avenue. Here's What's on the Bench This Winter

November 5, 2026

This November is the first one since the Grand Spirit Makerspace opened at 1128 Park Ave., and it shows on the calendar. Between now and the Tree Lighting on Nov. 27, the Rocky Mountain Folk School has classes in felting, stained glass, block printing, leatherwork and papermaking on the books. Then there's a full-day woodturning class in December. Four of the dated classes before the holidays meet in the makerspace on Park Avenue.

The Building Behind the Calendar

The makerspace is the shared center of Space To Create Grand Lake. It's Colorado's third Space to Create facility, and the Town broke ground on it in September 2025. The idea goes back to 2019, when a community survey drew more than 350 responses, over 150 of them from Grand Lake residents. The makerspace had its ribbon-cutting on May 23, 2026, and classes started soon after, according to the Grand Lake Creative District's project updates.

The Town's grand opening announcement calls it a shop and classroom of about 3,000 square feet for up to 28 people, managed by the Rocky Mountain Folk School. Nine live/work homes line the property: five studios and four one-bedrooms. Each one has a private storefront or studio that opens onto a shared boardwalk, so a visitor can walk from one resident's door to the next. The Town wrote the design for Grand Lake's workforce: cooks, shop and lodging staff, tradespeople, guides and town employees who also paint, throw pottery, build furniture or make jewelry. Residents can use the makerspace equipment, take its classes and teach their own. The residences held their grand opening on Sept. 18, 2026.

So the November classes are the shop's first full off-season run, offered in a building meant to have makers teaching where they live.

Mid-November, Class by Class

The Folk School teaches in two places this month. Some classes meet at the new makerspace on Park Avenue. Others meet at the Folk School's own building on Pitkin. Check the address on your class page before you head out.

Date Class Where Price

Sun., Nov. 22, 10 a.m.–3 p.m. Alpaca Felted Slippers Grand Spirit Makerspace $159

The two classes on Nov. 17 overlap from 2 to 3 p.m. and meet in different buildings, so you can't take both. The slipper workshop is the one that leaves you with something to wear through the coldest months. Ryan Mahosky of High Country Fleece teaches it, and materials are included in the $159. The papermaking class is a beginner session. The listing says pulp, tools, instruction and your finished sheets are all covered.

Sign up early. The Folk School says it can cancel a class that hasn't met its minimum enrollment at least a week before the date. For the Nov. 22 slipper class, that cutoff falls around Nov. 15.

The Long Weekend That Ties It Together

The class run ends just before the town's own holiday calendar starts. Here's how the next stretch lines up after the Nov. 22 workshop:

  1. Friday, Nov. 27, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. The Grand Arts Council's Olde Fashioned Holiday Craft Bazaar opens at the Historic Grand Lake Community House in the center of Town Park. Admission is free, and 20 Colorado crafters sell work they made themselves.
  2. Friday evening, Nov. 27. The Tree Lighting Ceremony brings carolers, cocoa, fire pits, Santa and reindeer. The Town calls it the start of the holiday season.
  3. Saturday, Nov. 28, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. The bazaar's second and last day.
  4. Tuesday, Dec. 1, 9 a.m. Adult team registration opens for the 10th Annual Pond Hockey Classic.
  5. Wednesday, Dec. 9. Woodturning: Christmas Trees & Snowmen with instructor Dennis Fanning runs all day at the Grand Spirit Makerspace for $127.20. The listing gives two start times, 9 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., so confirm with the Folk School before you go.

The bazaar doesn't name its sellers or list the makerspace as a participant. For anyone who made a gift in a November class, Dec. 9 is the last dated chance before the holidays to make another one in the Park Avenue shop.

January Lost Its Big Weekend

The next town-run events after the New Year's Eve fireworks are in February. The Town's 2026 schedule has fireworks on Dec. 31, weather permitting. January was supposed to have the third annual Grand Lake Skijoring event, Jan. 29–31, 2027. The organizer canceled it in early August. A Town of Grand Lake release dated Aug. 4, 2026 says the decision came a week after the Board of Trustees voted 5–2 to grant $100,000 toward the event.

The Grand Lake Nordic Center doesn't have a date on the calendar yet either. Its site still shows the 2025–26 schedule, and that season opened on Jan. 8, 2026. Until the recreation district posts this season's details, those older dates are only a reference point.

That leaves the Folk School's papermaking sessions as one of the few dated, repeating things on the calendar through midwinter. Go Grand Lake's event listings show Introduction to Handmade Papermaking repeating every Sunday through Jan. 24, 2027. If you want a standing weekend plan for January, it's there.

February, and How Far Ahead the Shop Is Booking

February picks up quickly once it arrives:

  • Feb. 6–7, 2027. The Pond Hockey Classic, with adult games Saturday and youth games Sunday.
  • Feb. 13, 2027. Winter Carnival, a Saturday.
  • Feb. 27–March 7, 2027. The Folk School's Traditional Cobbler Immersion Experience with instructor Matt Paisley. The nine-day program runs 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Pitkin building and includes a March 1–5 open-shop residency. Tuition is $2,014.

The cobbler program is a different kind of commitment from a $47.70 ladybug class, and it's already listed for the end of winter.

Using the Shop Without a Class

For locals who'd rather work on their own projects, the Folk School offers a monthly membership. Access depends on instructor approval and a safety sign-off. The class page groups its offerings into metal and jewelry, woodturning and woodworking, pottery, glass arts, fiber arts, and printmaking, so you can see which disciplines the shop teaches before you ask about membership. The Creative District says the makerspace was planned around woodworking, leatherworking, silversmithing and regional heritage crafts.

In its September grand opening announcement, the Town said a few residences were still available for lease through the Creative District. The Town designed each storefront as a place for its resident to sell work and teach classes. For more on the town's seasons, our Grand Lake neighborhood page and our look at how Grand Lake's fall moves to the valley cover the months on either side of this one.
